The Thatched Inn raise the bar for Tommy Langford

Country pub lock-in sports sponsorship deal

Abbotsham’s historic pub The Thatched Inn have backed their county’s biggest boxing star Tommy Langford.

The Thatched Inn, located in North Devon, has been the heart of the local community for the past 400 years and their devotion and passion for their area has led them to sponsoring local sports hero Tommy Langford from nearby Bideford.

The former British and Commonwealth middleweight champion is moving up to super-middleweight in his next fight on March 9 at the Walsall Town Hall on a BCB Promotions event.

Landlord Leslie Heard commented on the partnership, “Although we may not be a big business, we do feel it is really important for us to give back where possible and being able to support such a local talent, is amazing. It brings the whole community together as everyone gets behind Tommy.”

Langford grew up just two miles away from the picturesque country inn, but moved to Birmingham as a teenager to attend university, where he boxed for England and captained the team.

It was then that he met Britain’s first ever amateur world champion Frankie Gavin and the pair became sparring partners at Hall Green ABC, where Tommy still trains now with head coach Tom Chaney.

He turned pro in 2012 and caught the attention of Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren who guided him to British and Commonwealth titles and reached no.2 in the WBO world rankings.

The 29-year-old’s previous two fights saw him lose by a single point to local rival Jason Welborn in back to back British championship contests.

The knockdowns he suffered in those defeats were the sole reason for his decision to move up to 168lbs after experiencing 23 fights at 160lbs, where he reigned as British champion between November 2016 to May 2018.

He now plans to become a two-weight British champion in the next stage of his career.

Langford added, “I have always been proud of my roots and I always aim to represent North Devon in my career. The support I receive from the area is amazing and I’m always so grateful for the fans that come to watch me fight.

“I really appreciate Les sponsoring me, and The Thatched Inn is a place I frequent with my family because they serve lovely food and it’s a family friendly pub.

“I have ambitions to become a two-weight British and Commonwealth champion and The Thatched Inn’s financial support will help greatly, but first I have to give a good performance in my next fight to start building back up towards those title shots.”

Tommy Langford’s next fight on March 9 at Walsall Town Hall will be his super-middleweight debut on a Black Country Boxing Promotions event.
